INTEGRATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPY
REGINALD LENNEY THE HOLISTIC COACH
“Integrative medicine is not only for the ill, but for those who wish to increase their self-awareness, enhance their well-being, and help prevent health-related problems.”
A Brief Overview of Alternative Cancer Treatment.
There are, in fact, hundreds of alternative cancer treatments. These treatments usually can be combined with each other to increase their effectiveness.
There is also the “cancer diet,” meaning the things a cancer patient should and should not eat. Some “cancer diets” are so potent they are highly effective cancer treatments by themselves. Every cancer patient needs to be aware that many foods feed cancer cells and other foods virtually destroy the energy of almost all cells.
Product education; Our skin is the largest organ we have, anything we put on us, goes in us and effects our health. Are you aware of the household products you use every day? If the label says “do not ingest” does that means it’s OK to put it on your skin? If you do put it on your skin is it not absorbed into your body, blood, organs?
There are three main reasons alternative cancer treatments are far more effective than orthodox treatments;
First, natural cancer treatments are not toxic, thus they can be given in much higher doses than orthodox cancer treatments. While a person may think that chemotherapy is given in high doses, actually it is given in very low doses. A person can drink a quart of carrot juice but they cannot drink a quart of chemotherapy.
Second, alternative cancer treatments do no harm to the patient, thus the patient has a much longer time for the treatment to work. Patients would live far longer if they did absolutely nothing about their cancer (as opposed to using orthodox treatments); but alternative cancer treatments can extend life to the point that in many cases the patient is cured.
Third, alternative cancer treatments can be combined with each other in most cases. This ability allows the cancer patient to treat several different aspects of their cancer at the same time (such as getting supplements past the lactic acid blockade, building their immune system and getting rid of the cancer cells).
As a result of these advantages, and many more, newly diagnosed cancer patients (who start their cancer treatment with alternative cancer treatments), and who have at least 3 months to live, can achieve a cure rate of 93% or higher if they work with experts in combining multiple alternative cancer treatments or they do a lot of homework.
But many newly diagnosed cancer patients cure their cancer by just drinking a lot of carrot juice and avoiding the foods that feed their cancer and interfere with their immune system (eating the right foods is called the “cancer diet”).
By comparison, orthodox cancer treatments (using a comparable definition of “cure rate”), have less than a 3% cure rate. How many people do you personally know who were diagnosed with cancer more than 7 years ago who are still alive? The answer is probably none.
So if alternative cancer treatments can obtain a 93% cure rate on the same newly diagnosed cancer patients that orthodox cancer treatments obtain a 3% cure rate on, why would anyone start their cancer treatment with orthodox cancer treatments?
The answer, of course, is that people have been taught that orthodox cancer treatments are far superior to alternative cancer treatments. In fact, the pharmaceutical industry and its strongest allies (the media, the Food and Drug Administration, the medical establishment, Congress, the American Cancer Society, etc.)
It is also critical for people to understand that when a cancer patient starts their treatment with orthodox medicine, by the time they start using alternative cancer treatments they have lost a great deal of time needed for treatment plus their body has been severely damaged by orthodox cancer treatments and their body has been damaged by their cancer.
The longer a cancer patient is on orthodox cancer treatments, plus the longer it takes them to find superb alternative cancer treatments; before they switch to alternative cancer treatments; the lower their chance of survival.
While there are hundreds of alternative cancer treatments, it takes an expert, and the right alternative cancer treatments, to give an advanced cancer patient real hope for survival.
The cure rate on these types of patients is about 50% and only the best experts (such as those in clinics) can achieve that kind of cure rate. Curing these kinds of patients is literally a race against time. It is necessary to “get it right” the first time and then go on a long term treatment to restore the immune system, repair the damage to the colon and stomach and safely kill newly forming cancer cells.
Because most people know far more about orthodox cancer treatments than they know about alternative cancer treatments, and based on numerous conversations I have had with many people regarding cancer, it is obvious to me that almost every person on Earth believes that pharmaceutical drugs are the only effective cancer treatments and that God has not put any cures for cancer in Mother Nature.
Because people know virtually nothing truthful about alternative cancer treatments; more than 99% of all cancer patients begin their cancer treatment with chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and other man-made cancer treatments. What this means is that almost all cancer patients who want to learn about alternative cancer treatments have already had extensive orthodox cancer treatments. The number I always hear from people who deal with cancer patients is that about 95% of all cancer patients who seek out alternative cancer treatments have already had extensive orthodox cancer treatments.
This is not only a very, very sad statistic but more importantly it is an indication that these patients need massive amounts of good information quickly. That is precisely what our business is all about – information and education.
Let us look at one issue which cancer patients need to know about, but which most cancer patients have probably not thought about.
In its most simplistic sense; cancer is caused by an imbalance between the strength of the immune system and the number of cancer cells in a person’s body. In other words, every person on earth gets new cancer cells all the time. But for most people, this is not an issue because their immune system easily and safely kills these new cancer cells. Mother Nature has designed our bodies to continually and safely kill newly forming cancer cells.
However, when the immune system becomes weak, or when the number of cancer cells grows out of control, the person is eventually diagnosed with cancer. The treatments of orthodox medicine kill fast-growing cells. The problem is that the immune system has many fast-growing cells. The stomach lining also has some fast-growing cells and the colon has some fast-growing cells. All three of these systems are necessary to fight cancer. But these systems are severely damaged by most orthodox cancer treatments.
The approach of orthodox medicine is to use treatments which kill some cancer cells and may or may not shrink tumors, but they always damage the ability of the person to digest foods and safely kill cancer cells.
Orthodox cancer treatments cannot be a “cure” for cancer because the balance between the immune system and the number of cancer cells has not been restored. In fact, the balance has gotten far worse!!! This is why people who are lucky enough to survive their cancer are generally on chemotherapy for life. The chemotherapy takes the place of the immune system. This is about as logical as replacing a person’s heart with a sump pump.
On the other hand, alternative medicine seeks to safely kill cancer cells (without damaging the immune system, the stomach lining or the colon lining) and seeks to build or rebuild the immune system.
So let us take a hypothetical cancer case to analyze. Suppose a cancer patient has had a large number of chemotherapy sessions, several radiation sessions and has had extensive surgery. Suppose this person is sent home to die by orthodox medicine and a relative of his talks the person into looking at alternative cancer treatments. Suppose this person goes to a German cancer clinic and has virtually all of their cancer cells safely killed within a few weeks. Here is the question: Has this person been “cured” of cancer?
Think about the answer to this question before reading on….
To answer this question we have to ask another question: Has this person’s balance between the immune system and the number of cancer cells been restored?
In a sense the answer is “yes” and in a sense the answer is “no.”
Yes, the balance has been restored in the sense that there are no cancer cells. But this balance is because the person has no cancer cells and no immune system. That’s not a very good balance!!
It is impossible to restore a very damaged immune system (I include the lining of the stomach and the lining of the colon as part of the immune system because they are what extract nutrients from foods) within a few weeks or even a few months and in many cases the immune system cannot be restored within 2 or 3 years!!
In other words, the balance has been temporarily restored, but when this person gets new cancer cells, as all people do, there will be no immune system to safely kill the newly forming cancer cells. If nothing else is done, the cancer will return. Thus, while the clinic treatment has provided a superb start to a treatment; it should only be considered the beginning of the treatment because the immune system balance with new cancer cells has not been restored in the long run.
To achieve a true cure for cancer the immune system must be very strong and that cannot happen in three weeks. This does not mean a person needs to live in Germany for several years, it only means that when they get back from their clinic the work is far from over, but there has been a good start.
The point is that curing cancer must get started very quickly (because time is critical) and it also must be a long term process for those who have had a lot of orthodox cancer treatments. And this discussion has only been the tip of the iceberg (e.g. I haven’t even talked about lactic acid, cell membranes or many other topics).
Hopefully it is clear that alternative medicine has an entirely different approach to treating a cancer patient than does orthodox medicine.
Since you probably already know about orthodox cancer treatments, let me tell you a short story to highlight the difference between orthodox cancer treatments and alternative cancer treatments:
Suppose you own an antique dining room table, which is worth many tens of thousands of dollars. Suppose your butler tells you that there are dozens of cockroaches crawling around on your priceless table and you will be having dinner guests in one hour.
Your butler informs you that his job description does not include killing cockroaches and as he is leaving your house he offers you four options for getting rid of the cockroaches:
1) He offers you a chainsaw to “slash” the little critters to pieces,
2) He offers you a large and powerful flamethrower to “burn” the critters to pieces,
3) He offers you 2 gallons of a highly, highly toxic liquid chemical to “poison” the critters, or
4) He offers you an old $1 flyswatter.
Which of the four options would you use to get rid of the cockroaches? Would you choose one of the first three options (slash, burn and poison) because they are highly potent at killing cockroaches or would you choose the cheap, wimpy flyswatter?
Think about why you would make your choice.
Most likely you would pick the flyswatter because the other three items (which are far more powerful than a flyswatter at killing cockroaches) are also massively powerful at destroying your priceless table!!
Chemotherapy (the toxic chemical above), surgery (the chainsaw above) and radiation (the flamethrower above) do kill cancer cells, but they also kill healthy cells (the priceless antique table), damage the immune system, damage the ability of your digestive tract to process nutrients, etc. because they do not target cancer cells. Thus, these treatments cannot cure cancer (which has spread) without killing the patient first.
By comparison, alternative cancer treatments (the flyswatter), while not be as powerful as the other items are, however they are far more effective at treating cancer because these treatments target cancer cells and do not damage your healthy cells, Thus they can be given in much higher doses than any of the “orthodox” cancer treatments. Plus the many alternative cancer treatments can generally be combined.
As an Alternative coach and Therapist I have been working for over 24 years side by side with medical doctors toward the same goal – to protect and heal patients from diseases.
During my professional training program I got very basic knowledge of medicine, but I never understood why highly trained medical professionals were never taught anything about self-healing and the natural healing capacity of human beings. I asked myself why they were so uncomfortable with alternative (traditional) therapies. Where are all the free thinkers in modern medicine that have the power to bring attention to alternative therapies?
My next question was; is modern medicine neglecting our natural mind-body connection? I hope, not. Although integrative medicine is gaining recognition by the medical establishment, the pace is much too slow. By the end of their training, many doctors feel that the compassion and spirit which drew them to medicine has been lost. Why is that?
To better understand the terms used in this article, I would like to give you a few definitions:
Modern medicine also known as western, regular or conventional medicine is focused mainly on the physical aspect of the body for treatment and the critical ailment or disease. Another name for modern medicine is allopathic medicine.
Alternative Medicine known as traditional or natural medicine, is a general term given to wide range of therapies, most of which are more than 100 years old. Alternative medicine takes a holistic approach, meaning that it does not involve only the physical body, but also considers the mind and spirit. It defines health as a state of complete balance between the mind, body, and spirit.
Integrative Medicine combines western and alternative approaches and supplements, but does not replace conventional therapy. Integrative medicine neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative medicine uncritically.
Holistic Health goes one step further, taking the whole person into consideration. It combines the western and alternative approaches. Using natural supplements the focus is on cleansing, detoxing, strengthening and balancing the body. It takes into consideration the mind, body and spirit when diagnosing and treating a patient. The focus is on looking at what might be causing the problem, (depression, anxiety, poor diet, allergies) not only at symptom and the disease.
• Our goal is not just to cure or fix a symptom but to create optimum mental, physical and spiritual health in the person. Holistic Health promotes on-going care to prevent disease.
Holistic Health also integrates Alternative Medicine along with the ancient healing arts of therapy such as massage, energy and muscle balancing, organ strength breathing and yoga. Holistic Health looks at lifestyle, habits, mental attitude, nutrition, exercise and focus.
At the very beginning of the Integrative medicine era, many physicians were faced with a huge dilemma: either they learn and incorporate alternative therapies into their practice or they ignore them. But to incorporate them was to take a risk, the risk of losing the trust and confidence of their patients who were accustomed to other therapies. Also, physicians didn’t want to violate the sacrosanct principle they were taught: “First, Do Not Harm”. They were afraid of trying something new or different because conventional science tells us that “alternative treatment can’t work because we don’t know how it works “!
The dilemma is understandable from a medical point of view. Modern medicine wants everything to be explained scientifically and logically. That’s OK, but, on the other hand, there is a demand for alternative medicine, which people have tried and benefited from. How should one respond to huge demands for alternative methods? If alternative therapies work, and we know they do, then physicians need to consider them. Happily, they finally are doing so.
The medical profession is finally learning the ancient theory that we cannot understand disease unless we understand the person who has the disease and accept the fact that the mind and body are bound together. Our minds and bodies are designed to stay in balance.
The great majority of diseases for which patients seek medical help are in part psychosomatic, meaning that bodily symptoms are caused by mental or emotional disturbance. Therefore, we need the help of science to deal with our health, but we also need to provide the patient with hope and faith in the treatment. Today’s MD’s should be emotionally and scientifically competent to treat psychosomatic illness; if not the patient will return with another problem! Do you know why? Because no one looked into why he developed the illness in the first place!
Future generations of physicians need time to become familiar with integrative medicine. Hopefully they will find the time to better understand not only illness but also their patients. Integrative medicine is one step closer to a better relationship between patient and doctor.
We are proud to offer our clients Holistic Health: using conventional and alternative methods, bringing together the best of both worlds to ensure our patients eliminate pain and disease from their lives.
Holistic Health is not only for the ill, but for those who wish to increase their self-awareness, enhance their well-being, and help prevent health-related problems.
Thankfully, after many years of denying alternative therapies, modern western medicine is ready to accept mind/energy oriented therapies and other alternative treatments as powerful tools in their battle for people’s health. In this way patients and practitioners are partners in the healing process. Because of newly introduced training programs physicians are becoming more educated about alternative methods in Integrative Medicine. The world of modern western medicine is changing every day for better, and that is good for patients.
The goal of our service is to do three things:
1) Teach people about their many alternative cancer treatment options,
2) Be a practical guide on how to maximize the chances of survival of advanced cancer patients,
3) Teach people the many tactical issues which can affect the survival of a cancer patient, which means teach people about many potentially dangerous issues they likely don’t fully understand.
Our Cancer patients are never told to stop taking medication or treatments provided by their Doctors. When a patient chooses to use Conventional Medical treatment in combination to Holistic Health, our practice is to work hand in hand with the patient and their Doctor, keeping lines of communication and information flowing. Any patient using or considering complementary or alternative therapy is always advised to discuss this decision with their doctor. We understand that some complementary and alternative therapies may interfere with standard treatment or may be harmful when used with conventional treatment so this is always taken into consideration when working with patients.
Cancer and Complementary / Alternative Medicine:
It’s unpredictable, it’s uncanny. It may be lurking within a body and the body wouldn’t know. Many minor aches quietly ignored and quickly discarded in the past, may be the begetter of that which is pernicious, lethal and detrimental to life. It shrouds itself in dubious obscurity till the time comes for it to reveal the first symptoms. All this while, the fatal cell stealthily multiplies and spreads. It disseminates its devastating influence till it aborts the very functional mechanism of the human body. Such is the effect of cancer. Cancer is not a single disease. It is a large and complex family of malignancies that can affect virtually every organ in the body. Cancer kills one out of every four Europeans, surpassed only by heart disease as the leading cause of death . Over 1.2 million new cases are diagnosed every year, with half of them occurring in the lung, prostate, breast, colon and rectum. Cancer can strike at any age, although it is most common in people over 50.
There are around 200 different types of cancer. Two in five people, at some point in their lives, are susceptible to it. Cancer is the term given to a large group of diseases that vary in type and location. It is the result of a continuous, abnormal and relatively autonomous cell proliferation, which is due to the permanent alteration of some cells that gets transmitted to the cell family. It is a disease caused by the loss of control over a cell’s reproduction capacity. Rather than dividing in a controlled and programmed manner, the cell continues to divide and multiply abnormally, until a detectable lump or tumor develops.
This new growth can be either benign or malignant. A benign tumor does not spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body and so are not cancerous. They can often be removed and are rarely a threat to life. A malignant tumor, however, can spread and is cancerous. When this tumor spreads, its malignant cells break off and travel through the blood lymph system to other parts of the body, resulting in a secondary tumor, or metastasis. The name given to the cancer, however, is reflective of the origination of the cancer. For example, if lung cancer spreads to the brain, the disease is still called metastatic lung cancer, not brain cancer.
Both external and internal factors cause cancer. Factors such as chemicals, radiation, viruses, hormones and inherited mutations may act together to start or further cancer. Ten or more years may pass between exposure and detectable cancer.
Anyone, from children to senior citizens can get this disease. What causes cancer in the first place, and how quickly the cells grow and spread, vary from person to person. While a large number of people with cancer overcome the disease and live fulfilled lives for many years, some succumb within a few months. Thanks to the advances made by research, treatments are available for many forms of cancer. Depending on the type of the disease, these treatments are used alone or in combination, to either control cancer cell growth or to eliminate the disease entirely. The treatment choices depend on the stage of the tumor. Traditional or conventional treatment options may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy. These therapies have all been tested in clinical trials and deemed to be acceptable, although with often-unpleasant side effects.
But the journey with cancer is a long, stressful and strenuous one. The treatment procedure itself may be detrimental to the emotional well being of the patient. This is where complementary and alternative therapies have stepped in to offer holistic treatment.
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)-also referred to as integrative medicine-includes a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches and therapies. These therapies are used in an effort to prevent illness, reduce stress, prevent or reduce side effects and symptoms, and control or cure disease.
The terms “complementary” and “alternative” are often used interchangeably, when in fact they are two different therapies. Complementary therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, art therapy, counseling, massage, meditation, etc. are therapies, which are given alongside conventional cancer treatments. The former, however, does not replace the latter. They play a supportive role and are only used in addition to standard treatments. Some commonly used methods of complementary therapy include mind-body control interventions such as visualization or relaxation; manual healing, including acupressure and massage; homeopathy; vitamins or herbal products; and acupuncture. Alternative therapies, on the other hand, are used instead of conventional treatments. Electromagnetic therapy, essiac (a mixture of herbs), iscador (mistletoe extract) and gerson are some examples of alternative treatments. Conventional approaches to cancer treatment have generally been studied for safety and effectiveness through a rigorous scientific process. Less is known about the safety and effectiveness of complementary and alternative methods since many of them have not undergone rigorous evaluation. Some remedies, however, once considered unorthodox, are finding a place in cancer treatment—not as cures, but as complementary therapies that may help patients feel better and recover faster. Traditional therapies such as ayurveda have also been known to cure cancer. Though many of these therapies are still under evaluation, most have supporters who believe that they have added a positive aspect to their treatment and care, cope better with the physical symptoms and side effects of standard treatment, as well as with the complex and often distressing emotions that cancer can bring.
To mainstream doctors, cancer is a localized disease, to be treated in a localized manner. By cutting out the tumor, irradiating it, or flooding the body with toxic (and often carcinogenic) drugs, the orthodox physician hopes to destroy the tumor and thus save the patient. But all too often, the cancer is still present and has metastasized (spread elsewhere). The allopathic, conventional approach, for all its high-tech trappings, is based on a primitive medical philosophy: aggressively attacking an “enemy” disease. Often, the patient is devastated in the process, while the cancer and its underlying causes remain.
In contrast, the alternative healer regards cancer as a systemic disease, one that involves the whole person and body. In this view, the tumor is merely a symptom and the therapy aims to correct the root causes. Instead of aggressively attacking the tumor, many alternative therapies focus on rebuilding the body’s natural immunity and strengthening its inherent ability to destroy cancer cells. A number of alternative therapies also include natural measures to directly attack and destroy the tumor, whether by herbs, enzymes, or other means.
The three “proven” methods of treating cancer—chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery—may actually shorten life in many instances. Each of these treatments is invasive, has devastating side effects, and treats only symptoms. Each can cause the spread or recurrence of cancer. While these immunity-damaging approaches may at times be necessary, their successes have mostly been limited to relatively rare forms of cancer or the early stages of the disease. For most adult cancers, the orthodox therapies are virtually noncurative, though they may buy some time. For many patients, the standard therapies shorten the life span: “Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy, not from the cancer” observes Dr. Alan Levin of the University of California Medical School. “Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon, or lung cancers. The fact has been documented for over a decade…. Women with breast cancer are likely to die faster with chemotherapy than without It.”
Most cancers are treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or biological therapy. Treatment for cancer depends on the type of cancer; the size, location, and stage of the tumor; the person’s general health; and other factors. The doctor develops a treatment plan to fit each person’s situation. A team of specialists, which may include a surgeon, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, and others, often treat people with cancer.
The doctors may decide to use one treatment method or a combination of methods. These are the standard treatments that are being used on cancer patients. But since the treatment of cancer is usually a traumatic and painstaking process, the patient needs other therapies alongside the conventional ones. Cancer needs to be treated and cured not only in body but also in spirit.
Conventional Therapies: These are the tried, tested and clinically proven therapies for cancer. They may also be called standard treatments. Such therapies are most commonly used and widely accepted by the medical world in spite of debates on their side effects and curative capabilities in the later stages of cancer. Treatment options may include:
Surgery: This is the oldest form of treatment for cancer. Surgery is performed in order to remove the cancerous tumor as well as some of the surrounding tissue and lymph nodes near it.
Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) uses high-energy particles or waves, such as x-rays or gamma rays, to destroy cancer cells.
This is the use of medicines to treat cancer. Systematic chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs that enter the bloodstream and reach all areas of the body, making this treatment potentially useful for cancer that has spread.
Is used against certain cancers that depend on hormones for their growth. This treatment may include the use of drugs that stop the production of certain hormones or that change the way they work. Hormone production or hormone action can also be stopped by the surgical removal of hormone-producing glands.
Immunotherapy (also called biological therapy) is the use of treatments that promote or support the body`s immune system response to a disease such as cancer.
